SBTi Approves Tennant Company Net-Zero Targets

We’re extremely proud to share that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved Tennant Company’s net-zero targets. SBTi is the partnership between the United Nations, World Wildlife Fund, CDP and the World Resources Institute that serves as the global standard bearer in validating an organization’s emissions reduction goals.

As part of our Thriving People. Healthy Planet. sustainability framework, this approval signifies that Tennant Company’s net-zero targets align with best practices and are approved by the global standards-setting organization in this space.

Tennant Company is leading the way in the cleaning equipment industry with our emissions reduction goals. While the number of companies committing to science-based targets soared 87% from 2021 to 2022, goal validation remains stringent. Tennant Company is now one of only 500 companies globally with science-based net-zero targets validated by SBTi.

In 2018, Tennant Company was among the first 104 companies globally to set science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets. We refreshed those goals this year —reflecting the growth of our business, increasing demand from customers, investors and employees, progress against previous targets and the evolution of climate science.

Near- and long-term net-zero commitments

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing the global community and Tennant Company is committed to doing its part. SBTi validation is a critical step in our efforts to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across our product portfolio, and supply chain.

Our approved targets are:

  • Tennant Company commits to near-term targets of reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 45 percent by 2030, when compared to a 2021 base year. We also commit to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products 45 percent within the same timeframe.
  • Tennant Company commits to long-term targets of reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90 percent by 2040 when compared to a 2021 base year. We also commit to reducing scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and the use of sold products by 90 percent during the same timeframe.

How Tennant Company gets to net-zero

To achieve net-zero, Tennant Company will source 100 percent of electricity from renewable sources across all our global facilities. We will also eliminate emissions from our global vehicle fleet and partner with our customers to increase the energy efficiency of our machines. In addition, we will offer solutions, such as machine electrification, to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions during the use of our products.

All these efforts signify Tennant Company’s commitment to deeply cut emissions in our operations and facilities as well as our supply chain and from the use of our products.

We’re in this together

For Tennant Company, our Thriving People. Healthy Planet. sustainability framework is much more than a concept. It reflects our authentic leadership and unites our vision to create a cleaner, safer, healthier world with our ambition to reinvent how the world cleans.

As an industry leader of commercial floor cleaning solutions , we are uniquely positioned to drive positive change while creating shared value for our business, our customers, and society. Doing so will advance our business while helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals.

As we celebrate the significant milestone of Tennant Company gaining SBTi’s approval of our net-zero targets, we encourage other organizations to follow down this path too.

More companies taking ambitious action to fight climate change will have a much broader impact and affect change on a global scale.
